Estimation of hospital-based prevalence of musculoskeletal complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

<p>Life expectancy in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has increased, resulting in increased prevalence of musculoskeletal problems, which may be due to metabolic or microvascular causes. Musculoskeletal complications related to diabetes are common and can lead to severe morbidity, affecting the quality of life for these patients. The study was carried out with the aim to estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal complications in patients with T2DM. Methods: A total of 539 people with (T2DM) were included in the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. After detailed clinical screening, a Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) was administered to estimate musculoskeletal complications in T2DM. Results: Of the 539 patients with T2DM screened, low back pain was estimated in 31.5%, osteoarthritis of the knee was seen in 28.4%, early fatigue in 20.6%, shoulder adhesive capsulitis in 4.6%, 0.6% had carpel tunnel syndrome, Charcot’s joint was seen in 0.2%, Deputryen’s contracture in 0.2% and flexor tenosynovitis in 0.2% of people with T2DM. Conclusion: In the present study, we found 60.11% prevalence of musculoskeletal complications in subjects with T2DM. Low back pain, osteoarthritis of knee, early fatigue, shoulder adhesive capsulitis and carpel tunnel syndrome were the common complications found with high prevalence.</p>
