<p>Managing diabetes and related complications — particularly diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) — is a challenge that has been identified by Sheikh Kalifa Medical City (SKMC). Over the course of 3 years, the wound care team at SKMC planned, developed and implemented a programme to help prevent at-risk patients from developing DFUs. The end product comprises continuous staff education and competency training for foot assessment; 60-second foot screening for all adult inpatients with diabetes history, performed by the ward nurses; a pathway for the referral of diabetic patients at high-risk for DFUs; and collaboration with case coordinators to plan other required specialised services related to the patient needs. This article explains the steps required to create and implement a DFU-prevention programme to improve service delivery.</p>
